Cape Coast, Ghana
Cape Coast, Ghana is the capital of Ghana's Central Region and is the top tourist destination in the country of Ghana. It is also the capital city for the Fantses, also known as Mfantsefo. who call the city Oguaa.
Cape Coast is about 165 km away from Accra, the capital of Ghana and is located right on the Gulf of Guinea. With more than 80,000 people, the city is rich with history, culture, and a variety of wonderful tourist attractions to enjoy. The city offers many experiences and is one of the most historical cities that you'll find in the country of Ghana today.
Among many other things Cape Coast has the following to offer:
Elmina Castle
Elmina Castle: Built in 1482 by Portuguese traders, Elmina Castle was the first European slave-trading post in all of sub-Saharan Africa. Located on the western coast of present-day Ghana, it was originally built to protect the gold trade but following its capture by the Dutch in 1637, it came to serve the Dutch slave trade with Brazil and the Caribbean. The castle came under British ownership in the 1800s.
Elmina lagoon
Elmina lagoon: Opposite Cape Coast castle in the lagoon, it is very lively with boats, especially when the fishermen return from sea with the catch of the day.
Fort St Jago
Fort St Jago: Before the Dutch beated the Portuguese in Elmina, they already attacked them twice from the sea. Twice, they were defeated. In 1637 however, they attacked them from the inland, with the help of the local chief. From St. Jago hill, in the heart of today's Elmina, they opened fire on the Portuguese who were too surprised to react.
When the Dutch had their base in St. George's Castle, after their victory, they wanted to prevent enemies from doing the same thing as they did. Therefore, they built a second fort in Elmina, right on top of St. Jago hill. In 1666 Fort Coenraadsburg was finished, currently known as the more neutral "Fort St. Jago". The building only has a military purpose: from there they could even look further into the ocean than from St. Goerge's.
Kakum National Park
Kakum National Park: This forested parkland makes for a great day hike with fantastic views, especially from the wooden suspension bridges that soar a hundred feet overhead.
International Stingless Bee Centre
International Stingless Bee Centre: The International Stingless Bee Centre (ISBC) is a sanctuary for stingless bees and a place of environmental education and ecotourism. Many people do not know about stingless bees, especially African species, nor have many sampled their honey, pollen and propolis, delectable activities offered at the ISBC. In addition to beekeeping, the ISBC also serves as a station for international research.
