Antoinette Adwoa Kudoto

Learn how to drum from Ghana’s only female master drummer, Antoinette Adwoa Kudoto. Antoinette is from Cape Coast, Ghana (West Africa) and has been teaching drumming and dance since she was 13 years old. As a young girl growing up, she always knew what she wanted to do. She was always willing to learn: learning how to have fun drumming and dancing. Drumming has always been part of her life and she does it with enthusiasm and joy. Growing up, women were not allowed to drum, but Adwoa managed to break through the obstacles she faced from male drummers and the Ghanaian culture in general, and it is this that makes her so unique in what she does. She is an excellent teacher and her classes are always fun with lots of room for plenty of laughter. Her fame, talents and skills in performing and teaching are known locally and internationally.

In 2000, Antoinette Adwoa Kudoto received an award from the Arts Critics and Reviewers Association of Ghana (ACRAG) as the Only Versatile Female Master Drummer in Ghana, but before and after that she has received honors from both Television Africa, International Center for African Music and Dance, and Center for Intercultural and Talent Development. It is with this that she travels all around the US and Europe teaching drumming and dancing to individuals and students of all ages at colleges, high schools, pre-schools, special needs schools. She is always willing to share her culture with others - both drumming culture and Ghanaian culture in general. Antoinette is also the leader and founder of the group, Nyame Tsease African Traditionals, comprised of young and talented drummers and dancers in Cape Coast, Ghana with whom she performs and teaches. In her spare time, Antoinette continues performing with local musical groups she is a part of. She drums with jazz, high-life, reggae and traditional bands in the surrounding areas of Cape Coast as well as in the US and in Europe. She feels fortunate to have recorded on CDs of international groups as her art form can be appreciated by those around the world.
